Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA has launched the all-new 2022 YZF-R7 as the latest cruiserweight supersport motorcycle in the company's portfolio. After several rumours, speculations and teasers, Yamaha has finally offered the latest model as a successor to the beloved YZF-R6 and to fill the void left by its withdrawal – as the R6 failed to meet the stringent Euro-5 emissions standards.

While the R7 is said to be the successor to the R6 and looks like it at first glance, what's written on paper suggests otherwise. The first thing you notice is the engine. The YZF-R7 is said to be powered by the same 689cc DOHC CP2 liquid-cooled four-stroke inline-twin engine that is also used in its sibling, the MT-07 naked streetfighter. The Yamaha YZF-R6 used a 599 cc in-line four-cylinder engine to pump power. It's also worth noting that the MT-07 platform that the R7 is based on is the one the company used for its extremely popular, affordable, mid-weight naked bike that also became an adventure bike.

In terms of power and torque, the R7 produces 72bhp at 8750rpm and 67Nm. For the R6, power was set at 118 hp and peak torque at 62 Nm at 6,500 rpm. One of the transmission options offered for the R7 is a six-speed unit, and as a bonus it comes with slip and assist functions. In addition, only the upshift will be offered as an option.

Similarly, Yamaha says the R7 is built from the ground up with a sleek ultra-slim lightweight chassis that also differs from the R6. The R6 featured the tried and tested double beam chassis, while the R7 comes with a narrow high-tensile steel frame similar to that of the MT-07.

Finally, design cues! The R6 was more like the R1, due to its twin LED projectors peeking out from the front fairing. In the case of the R7, it's completely redesigned and comes with a single LED unit located centrally in the air scoop, but the LED DRLs have been retained. Similarly, the windshield is now taller than its predecessor, providing better wind protection. The side fairings have also been completely redesigned and now come with massive scoops. The R7's tail section is bold and upright, as is standard with Yamaha's R-series, and looks bolder than that of the previous iteration. All in all, it's up to you to decide whether you consider the R7 a true successor to the mighty R6.

Due to some of the details on the R7, some riders may feel that the new bike is just another version of the MT-07. But we beg to differ. There are some key differences between the two models, and the R7 features new components. Instead of the non-adjustable telescopic units up front on the MT-07, the 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 gets 41mm fully adjustable KYB upside-down forks. The brakes are also different: while the MT-07 uses twin 298mm discs with axial calipers up front, the R7 comes with radially mounted four calipers.

The 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 is not of a similar ilk to the original R7. Apart from the name, the all-new R7 has nothing in common with the original R7, which was a homologation special superbike from the late 1990s.

Although the R-7 has already been launched in the international market, it is not certain when the 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 will be launched in Nepal. As of now, the R7 is priced at USD 8,999 in the US and we believe the super sports bike will make its way to Nepal once it hits the Indian market.
